Reputation and Impression
say your best buddy host a party and you went
and he also invited alot people and that night you get to meet alot people
how does this relate to reputation? let's have a look at these situation
situation 1
your best bud greeted you, and both of you were talking
then, from time to time, he introduce you some of the guests of his
in the midst of chatting, far away, but still in your sight, there is this guy lets call him Harry...
your buddy describe him a little and said
"you see that guy? that's harry... damn i hate him.. he came uninvited"
and proceed tobitch describe the negative part of this Harry
situation 2
you get to know this Harry guy first, and you guys chatted along quite well...
he seems like a nice guy to you
and then, after the party, finally your best buddy have time to entertain you and both of you start to talk about the people in the party
and when this Harry guy is mentioned, your buddy says
"that Harry guy? damn i hate him... he came uninvited"
and proceed tobitch describe the negative part of this Harry
from both situation,
will your impression toward this Harry guy changed?
i've come across similar situation, and my answer is yes, it changed!
if situation 1, I might don't bother to get to know this Harry at all
in situation 2, yeah, i have a little doubts, but I'll stand by my buddy's side
lets change the situation:
replace the "best buddy" with another person(urmm say Helen) that you just met from the party.
situation 1(aka situation 3), you get to know Helen first before knowing Harry
situation 2(aka situation 4), you get to know Harry first!
both situation : Helen's the 1 bitching .. ahaks
for new situations
my answer still da same
my impression toward Harry also changes(just that in a smaller factor)
seriously, thatz how important reputation is,
but but but but
there's 1 night i was thinking, why must I blindly follow and trust their opinion toward Harry?
aren't it a little unfair to Harry??
I am judging/profiling Harry based on best buddy/Helen's judgment..
those opinion should be a reference, not the way I should look at Harry
conclusion : do not bias
